Diploma in Computer Science(DCS)

Introduction

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering was established in June 2017 to strengthen training, research, and innovation in Computing and ICT. The department offers programs at Certificate, Diploma, Bachelor’s, and Master’s levels, alongside the Department of Applied Computing and Information Technology.

The objectives of the department are to:

  • Deliver high-quality undergraduate and graduate education in both theoretical and practical Computer Science and Engineering.
  • Conduct research that addresses real-world ICT challenges.
  • Promote international collaborations through student and staff exchanges.
  • Produce excellent computer scientists and engineers capable of addressing national ICT priorities such as robotics, mobile applications, and software development.
  • Support contextual research and consultancy services for community development.
  • Develop relevant programs that enhance ICT adoption in society.
  • Foster ICT entrepreneurship and innovation, especially in software and digital content development.

Admission Requirements

Admission into the first year is strictly through Direct Entry, and applicants must meet the following:

  • Direct Entry (UACE Applicants)
    • Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) with at least 5 credits, including Mathematics.
    • Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) with 1 principal pass and 2 subsidiary passes obtained in one sitting.
    • Any equivalent qualification as determined by NCHE in consultation with UNEB.
  • Diploma Holders Scheme
    • A Certificate in Computer Science, ICT, or a related field from a recognized institution.
    • Must have passed with at least a Credit or Upper class (depending on university policy).
  • Degree Holders Scheme
    • Applicants with a Degree in any computing-related or science-based field who may wish to upgrade their practical computing skills.
  • Mature Age Entry Scheme
    • Must be 25 years or older.
    • Must have passed the Mature Age Entry Examinations accredited by NCHE (both written and oral components).
  •  Higher Education Certificate (HEC) Entry
    • A Higher Education Certificate (Science/ICT track) with at least a Class C or better.
    • Must have passed Mathematics at O-level.

Program Details

  • Duration: 2 years (4 semesters), with each semester lasting 17 weeks (15 teaching weeks + 2 exam weeks)
  • Mode of Study: Day, Evening, or Weekend (depending on campus schedule)
  • Campus: Offered at the Faculty of Computing and Informatics (main campus)
  • Award: Diploma in Computer Science
