      Dr. Miria Nakamya is an Economist and Lecturer in the Department of Applied Economics at Makerere University Business School (MUBS), where she also serves as the Programme Leader for the Bachelor of Arts in Economics. She holds a Ph.D. in Economics (Energy Economics) from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), Norway. Her research focuses on energy economics, environmental economics, climate change, and sustainable development, with particular emphasis on developing-country contexts. Through interdisciplinary research and advanced quantitative modelling, she contributes to evidence-based policy design aimed at supporting sustainable energy transitions, inclusive economic growth, and environmental sustainability.

      Academic Qualifications

      • Ph.D. in Economics (Energy Economics), Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), Norway. Doctoral dissertation: Bioenergy for Sustainable Development in Developing Countries, which examined the socio-economic impacts, policy alternatives, and environmental constraints of bioenergy adoption using Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) modelling.
      • Master of Arts in Economics, Makerere University, under the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) Collaborative Master’s Program (CMAP).
      • Bachelor of Arts in Economics, Makerere University.

      Research Interests

      Dr. Nakamya’s research spans applied economics, with particular interests in economic development, energy and environmental economics, climate change, and sustainable, inclusive development. Her work addresses a broad range of microeconomic and macroeconomic policy issues, examining how economic, energy, and environmental policies influence growth, welfare, equity, productivity, and environmental sustainability in developing economies.

      Her specific research interests include:

      • Energy economics and energy policy
      • Climate change economics and climate policy
      • Sustainable and inclusive economic development
      • Renewable energy systems and energy transition pathways
      • Electricity markets, tariff design, and energy pricing
      • Environmental taxation and carbon pricing
      • Welfare and distributional impacts of energy and environmental policies

      Her methodological expertise includes Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) modelling, partial equilibrium modelling, energy system optimization, microsimulation, and applied econometrics, supported by proficiency in Python and Stata.

      Since joining Makerere University Business School in 2010, Dr. Nakamya has taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses in:
