MUBS ADVANCES COMPETENCE-BASED LEARNING THROUGH 17TH ANNUALHOSPITALITY DAY.

Makerere University Business School (MUBS) has reaffirmed its commitment to competence-based education with the successful hosting of its 17th Annual Hospitality Day, held on April 24, 2026, in Kampala.

The student-led event, organized under the Bachelor’s programme in Leisure, Events, and Hospitality Management, provided a dynamic platform for experiential learning. Students showcased their ability to translate classroom theory into real-world practice through activities in event production, catering, fashion and design, mixology, and recreation.

Speaking at the event, MUBS Principal Prof. Moses Muhwezi praised the students’ innovation and performance, emphasizing the importance of practical application in modern education. He noted that competence-based learning is best demonstrated when students actively apply their skills in real-life scenarios.

The Guest of Honour, Hon. Balaam Barugahara, Minister of State for Youth and Children Affairs, highlighted the evolving nature of the hospitality industry. He stressed that today’s professionals must go beyond service delivery to create memorable experiences, requiring adaptability, creativity, and innovation.

The Hospitality Day also served as a formal academic assessment, with lecturers conducting on-site evaluations as part of coursework. This approach reflects MUBS’ strategic focus on equipping students with industry-relevant skills in line with Uganda’s transition toward skills-based education.

After a brief hiatus, the return of the event marks a renewed commitment to hands-on training and industry engagement. The initiative received strong support from partners such as Fenon Events, Pepsi, MTN Pulse, Bell, Buffalo Cycling Club, Zebra Boxing Club, and Unique Fashions, alongside media coverage from Promise TV, Capital FM, and KISS FM.

By placing students at the center of planning and execution, MUBS continues to produce graduates who are both academically grounded and industry-ready capable of meeting the demands of a rapidly evolving global hospitality sector.
