Friday, May 8, 2026, will remain a landmark moment in the history of Makerere University Business School as 171 students were awarded certificates during the inaugural graduation of the Skills Development Training Programme, a first-of-its-kind achievement for the institution.
The ceremony marked far more than the completion of a training programme. It was a celebration of transformation, empowerment, innovation, and the institution’s growing commitment to preparing students for success beyond the classroom. The occasion highlighted the importance of equipping young people with practical, employable, and entrepreneurial skills that complement academic excellence and respond to the demands of today’s dynamic world of work.
The Skills Development Training Programme was established to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and real-world application by empowering students with competencies that enhance employability, leadership, creativity, communication, and self-reliance. Through a comprehensive and practical learning approach, students underwent intensive training in self-discovery and goal setting, business opportunity identification and ideation, organizational and people dynamics, managing credit and debt, effective leadership and public speaking, writing winning application letters and professional CVs, as well as AI and digital skills for employability.
In addition to professional development modules, the programme also provided hands-on vocational training in perfumery, hair dressing, cake baking, and pizza baking, offering students practical entrepreneurial skills that can create pathways for innovation, income generation, and self-employment.
